PINK IN THE PARK TO LAUNCH GREAT PINK RUN
Sonia O’Sullivan, Robbie Henshaw, Elaine Crowley, Anna Geary, James Patrice and Shane Byrne join breast cancer survivors to launch this year’s Great Pink Run with Avonmore Slimline Milk.
Dublin, Sunday, July 22, 2018. A host of well-known faces gathered in the Phoenix Park to launch this year’s Great Pink with Avonmore Slimline Milk, which takes place October 13/14 in Dublin and Kilkenny. Breast cancer survivors Orla Byrne and Teresa Costello were joined by sporting legend (and Great Pink Run Patron) Sonia O’Sullivan, who has taken part for the past five years, and camogie player and TV personality Anna Geary, who will lead out the Dublin run this year. International rugby player Robbie Henshaw, former international player and rugby pundit Shane Byrne, broadcaster and Breast Cancer Ireland Ambassador, Elaine Crowley, and social media and TV personality James Patrice and his mother Veronica Butler all came along to lend their support.
It is expected that over 8,000 people will take part in the eighth year of the event by running, jogging or walking the 10K challenge or the 5K fun run to support Breast Cancer Ireland’s research and awareness efforts around the country.
Commenting on the success of the Great Pink Run, Breast Cancer Ireland CEO Aisling Hurley says, “We are delighted with the success of the Great Pink Run, which has gone from strength to strength, raising almost €1m to fund our research and awareness programmes around the country. We are particularly calling out to the men this year to take part and lend their support, and in doing so help change the landscape of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in Ireland.”
Between 30%-50% of all cancer cases are preventable, according to the World Health Organisation, which claims that regular physical activity and the maintenance of healthy body weight, along with healthy diet, can considerably reduce cancer risk.
Group HR and Corporate Affairs Director of Glanbia, Michael Patten, comments, “Good nutrition and fitness are widely recognised as helping to protect against cancer and support overall health and wellbeing. We are very proud once again to be involved with this fantastic event, which supports the pioneering research work of Breast Cancer Ireland. Many of us in Glanbia are getting back into training and looking forward to taking part in Dublin and Kilkenny in October.”
