BCI Coffee Morning to mark World Cancer Day 2020
On the occasion of World Cancer Day (February 4), Breast Cancer Ireland was pleased to welcome its patient ambassadors, supporters and sponsors to a coffee morning in the Fitzwilliam Hotel, Dublin. BCI CEO Aisling Hurley provided an update on the year in review, explaining how funds raised during the year are being spent and projects supported.
Professor Arnie Hill, Chairman of Breast Cancer Ireland and leading Breast Surgeon spoke about the ever-changing positive landscape for breast cancer, with less invasive surgery into the future. Professor Hill was followed by Professor Leonie Young, lead researcher, who introduced her team of scientists and mathematicians, which are actively seeking new targeted therapies for certain metastatic conditions encountered.
The coffee morning was rounded off by a powerful insightful talk from Orla Byrne, BCI Patient Ambassador, who spoke of her sudden diagnosis three years ago with aggressive metastatic breast cancer and the treatment plan that ensued (involving the use of a new clinical trial drug, Palbociclib, which has helped her to live with her cancer and regain her life).
